1/3s are the empiricists. The Investigator in your conscious Personality wants a solid foundation — to know how things work from the bottom up — while the Martyr in your unconscious Design discovers what doesn't work by running into it. Your life is a research project: study, test, fail, study some more. The 'failures' aren't failures; they're how you separate what's true from what only sounded true. 1/3 is the most personal of the personal-destiny profiles — your life is for you, and the wisdom you build is yours.
“The very nature of a Hexagram, the very construct itself, cannot survive without a solid foundation.”
1st Line: The Investigator
The 1st line is the foundation of the hexagram — the ground floor of the house. Investigators need to know how things work from the bottom up before they feel secure, and the more they know, the less they fear. When they don't allow themselves the focused study they need, the not-self feeling is a chronic sense of inferiority. Once their foundation is solid, they become unshakable authorities on what they investigated.
3rd Line: The Martyr
The 3rd line is the Martyr — the spiral staircase between the lower and upper floors. Their gift is discovering what does not work, by bumping into it. They're our primary catalysts of change: more interpersonally adaptable than they look, more resilient than they feel, and the fastest line to spot a real flaw or a real mutation. When operating as their true self, there is no such thing as a mistake — every bond made and broken is data.
